2011 Cricket World Cup has been truly historic, scintillating and memorable. The host country took away the cup in Great style.
The final between the two great cricketing neighbours, namely, India and Sri Lanka on 02.04.2011 was Fantastic. Both teams played excellently.
It was just that it happened to be India’s Day. So, India won and Sri Lanka lost. But, it was evident that the players fought equally well.
Let us look at some of the Highlights of all matches played by India in the world cup 2011 :
WORLD CUP FINALS
India vs Sri Lanka
Date : 02.04.2011 : Venue : Mumbai
Sri Lanka Batted first and scored 274 for 6 wickets in 50 overs.
India batting next, scored a marvelous 277 for 4 wickets in 48.2 overs.
M.S.Dhoni who scored 91 runs in 79 balls hitting 8 fours and 2 sixes was declared man of the Match.
Yuvraj Singh was declared Man of the Tournament because of his sterling all-round performance with bat and ball. Yuvraj Singh took 2 wickets for 49 runs in 10 overs and also scored 21 runs in 24 balls remaining NOT OUT along with Dhoni at the end. For India Gautam Gambhir also scored a well played 97 runs in 122 balls.
For Sri Lanka, Mahela Jayawardene scored 103 runs in 88 balls.
WORLD CUP SEMI FINALS
India vs Pakistan
Date : 30-03-2011 :Venue :Mohali (Mumbai)
India bet Pakistan by scoring 260 for 9 and thereafter, taking away all the wickets of Pakistan for 231 runs in 49.5 overs. India won by 29 runs
Sachin Tendulkar scored 85 runs in 115 balls and was declared the man of the match
WORLD CUP QUARTER FINALS
India vs Australia
Date :24.03.2011; Venue : Ahmedabad
INDIA defeated Australia by 5 wickets, scoring 261 runs for 5 wickets in 47.4 overs against 260 runs for 6 wickets scored by Australia in 50 overs.
India's innings was built on half-centuries by Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh.
Yuvraj Singh took 2 wickets for 44 runs in 10 overs and also scored 57 runs in 65 balls, and was therefore declared as the player of the match.
Ricky Ponting scored 104 runs in 118 balls for Australia.
GROUP B MATCHES
In the initial Group B matches, India played 6 matches, won 4, tied 1 and lost 1 ,finishing second in Group B with 9 points.
South Africa played 6 matches, won 5 and lost 1 and stood at the top with 10 points. The details are below :
India vs Bangladesh
Date :19.02.2011; Venue : Dhaka
India won with 370 runs for 4 wickets scored in 50 overs.
Bangladesh scored 283 runs for 9 wickets in 50 overs.
Virender Sehwag scored 175 runs in 140 balls and was the man of the match.
India’s score in this match is the Highest score in world cup.
India vs England
Date : 27-02-2011; Venue :Bangalore
India scored 338 runs against 338 runs scored by England and the Match stood tied between the 2 countries. India has scored over 300 runs twice in this world cup – one against England and another against Bangladesh.
Player of the match: Andrew Strauss (Eng)
Sachin Tendulkar scored 120 runs in 115 Balls, his 47th ODI century and 5th World cup century, the highest number of centuries by anyone ever in a World Cup.
Zaheer Khan took 3 wickets for 64 runs in 10 overs.
Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh also made half-centuries.
Andrew Strauss made his highest score in ODI cricket, with 158 runs in 145 balls, before being dismissed by Zaheer Khan. He was declared the man of the Match. Graeme Swann scored one run off the final ball, tying the match.
India vs Ireland
Date : 06.03.2011; Venue : Bangalore
Ireland scored 207 runs in 47.5 overs losing all wickets. After that, India scored 210 runs for 5 wickets in 46 overs and won the match by 5 wickets.
Man of the match was Yuvraj Singh, who took 5 wickets for 31 runs in 10 overs and also made 50 runs in 75 Balls. He became the first player to score a 50 and take 5 wickets in a World Cup match.
India vs Netherlands
Date : 9-3-2011; Venue : Delhi
Netherlands scored 189 runs in 46.4 overs losing all wickets, while India scored 191 runs losing 5 wickets in 36.3 overs, and winning by 5 wickets
Man of the match was Yuvraj Singh who scored 51 runs in 73 balls.
Zaheer Khan took 3 wickets for 20 runs in 6.4 overs.
In this match, Sachin Tendulkar became the first player to score more than 2,000 runs in World Cup cricket. He scored 27 runs in 22 balls.
India vs West Indies
Date : 20-03-2011; Venue : Chennai
India scored 268 runs in 49.1 overs losing all the wickets. West Indies 188 runs in 43 overs losing all wickets. India won by 80 runs.
Player of the match was Yuvraj Singh who scored 113 runs in 123 Balls.
Zaheer Khan took 3 wickets for 26 runs in 6 overs.
India vs South Africa
Date :12-03-2011; Venue : Nagpur
India scored 296 runs in 48.4 overs, losing all wickets, after electing to bat first. South Africa scored 300 runs for 7 wickets in 49.4 overs, and won the match by 3 wickets
Player of the match: Dale Steyn (SA) who took 5 Indian wickets for 50 runs in 9.4 overs. Jacques Kallis scored 69 runs in 88 balls for West Indies.
For India, Sachin Tendulkar scored 111 runs in 101 runs. Harbhajan Singh took 3 wickets for 53 runs in 9 overs. This was the only match India lost in the world cup.

(1) Tilakaratne Dilshan of Sri Lanka scored 500 runs in 9 matches
(2) India’s Sachin Tendulkar scored 482 runs in 9 matches.

HIGHEST SCORES :
(1) Virender Sehwag of India (175 runs) against B’desh
(2) Andrew Strauss of England (158 runs) against India and
(3) Tilakaratne Dilshan of Sri Lanka (144 runs not out) against Zimbabwe.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH AWARDS :
Yuvraj Singh tops the list with 4 Player of the match awards from 8 matches. He was also the Man of the Tournament. Congrats, Yuvi.
BOWLING TOP SCORERS : Most wickets
(1) Shahid Afridi of Pakistan stands at No.1 with 21 wickets in 8 matches.
(2) Zaheer Khan of India also has 21 wickets but from 9 matches.
(3) Tim Southee of New Zealand has taken 18 wickets in 8 matches.
FIELDING STATISTICS :
Indian Players do not figure much in Fielding statistics.
MOST CATCHES TAKEN :
Indian Players do not figure much here also.
OVER ALL : India has put up a Fantastic performance in the world cup. Statistically, we are still not great in fielding and catches. This is one department for improvement. Sri Lanka also is a very strong side, with great players, who have put in sterling performances. While India has several Stars – YUVI truly deserves the Man of the tournament award, with absolutely no competition.
