The following is what wiki pedia says  about Eid:

Eid-ul-Fitr, "Eid-ul-fitr", Eid al-Fitr, Id-ul-Fitr, or Id al-Fitr (Arabic: ‎عيد الفطر ‘Īdu l-Fiṭr), often abbreviated to Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting (sawm).

Eid is an Arabic word meaning "festivity", while Fiṭr means "breaking the fast". India observes it as National Holiday.

The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. The first day of Eid, therefore, falls on the first day of the month, Shawwal. This is a day where Muslims around the world  celebrate the Eid Festivities.

Eid al-Fitr has a particular salat (Islamic prayer) consisting of two raka'ah (units) and generally offered in an open field or large hall.

It is performed in congregation (Jama’at) and has an additional extra six Takbirs (raising of the hands to the ears while saying "Allahu Akbar" [God is Great]), three of them in the beginning of the first raka'ah and three of them just before ruku' in the second raka'ah in the Hanafi school.

Muslims believe that they are commanded by God, as mentioned in the Qur'an, to continue their fast until the last day of Ramadan[3] and pay the Zakat and fitra before doing the Eid prayer.

Note: There are different variations of spelling Eid-ul-Fitar.

Other Details :

Although Eid al-Fitr is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year, since the Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar and the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar. This difference means Eid al-Fitr moves in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days every year. The date of Eid al-Fitr may also vary from country to country depending on whether the moon has been sighted or not.

What do people do?

India's Eid-ul-Fitar festival starts on the first day of the month of Shawwal (or Shawwl). Many Muslims attend community prayers and listen to a sermon at Eid al-Fitr. Those have not given the charity known as zakat al-fitr during Ramadan do so during Eid al-Fitr. Zakat al-fitr consisting of a quantity of food, such as barley, dates, raisins or wheat flour, or its monetary equivalent given to poor people in the community.

It is common for Islamic communities organize community meals. Many Muslims in India also wear new clothes, visit family members, exchange Eid cards and give presents of sweets and small toys to children.

Public life (In India)

National, state and local government offices, post offices and banks are closed. Islamic stores, businesses and other organizations may be closed or have reduced opening hours. Those wishing to use public transport on the day may need to contact the local transport authorities to check on timetables.

Large prayer meetings are held by Muslims all across the country.

IFTAAR PARTIES :

In many countries, Non-Muslims also host the Iftaar Parties for the Muslims Fraternity – for breaking the fast.

In India, this Year, the president Of India hosted an Iftaar Party, which was attended by Sonia Gandhi, L.K.Advani, CPM leader Sitaram Yechuri and many other Political luminaries.

At state levels, different Political Party chiefs and luminaries hosted similar Iftaar Parties for the Muslim friends.

Such coming together in Eid Celebrations – marks the very essence of Human Brotherhood.

This Blog wishes all the Muslims of the world – EID MUBARAK.
